A l'âge de 86 ans, Wai-chan est un des derniers pêcheurs encore en activité d'un petit village situé sur les rives de la Mer Intérieur de Seto. Kumi-san, la commère du cru, se promène tous les jours le long de la côte. Alors que Koso-san, qui s'occupe seule du petit magasin de fruits de mer laissé par son mari décédé, fait le lien entre les villageois. Avec Inland Sea, Kazuhiro Soda pointe sa caméra sur Ushimado, village qu'affectionnait l'immense Shohei Imamura qui y tourna Pluie noire et Dr Akagi. Il brosse un portait en noir et blanc, à la fois poétique, délicat et bouleversant du crépuscule d'un monde sur le point de disparaître.
